Lovely sunny day today, so we've been doing some gardening. Started by mowing the lawns, taking care not to mow the edges where there are wild flowers growing. This afternoon we saw a baby goldfinch on our bird feeder, but we hadn't put out any seeds, so it flew away. That reminds me that I must order some nyjer seeds from the RSPB, which is what goldfinches like, I have read, so that's what I'm going to do now.
Half-term is nearly upon us and we're still alive (but I don't want to tempt fate!). I'm going to wait and see what the weather's like before deciding what to do and anyway my wife and son will probably have their own ideas about what they want to do, so I'll just wait and see what happens as usual. Don't want to be cooped up inside for the whole time if we can possibly avoid it.
Went down to the field today and saw a couple of black bags lying next to the fence. Thought they looked suspicious - stolen maybe, but in the end they turned out to belong to a friend of our son, who lives in Limpley Stoke in one of the big new houses near the church. I had never seen a paddle-board bag before so I thought they were suitcases or musical instrument cases or something. They had deliberately hidden them in the bushes so nobody would find them, but they hadn't considered that it might look suspicious to somebody who can remember the days when we had to report suspicious-looking bags to the police in case of IRA bombs. Anyway, it was a great relief when I met my son and his friend on their way back to our house, as I'm always a bit anxious when they go on the river swimming or paddle-boarding. Our son would like to get his owm board, but today he found out how heavy they are so maybe he will have been put off. Anyway we've got nowhere to keep it. My wife's ...
